How should we carry out the transport of the dog for the safety of all?

So, whether it's for short daily journeys or the long journey to go on vacation...

Let's discover the right behaviors to adopt when transporting dogs.

According to one study, only 20% of drivers systematically tie up their animals on all types of trips. In addition to the obvious risks of such behavior, it turns out that our dogs and cats are the 3rd cause of distraction among drivers after children and cell phones.

CARRYING YOUR DOG FREELY IN THE CAR: THE RISKS

In freedom and unsecured in the car, the animal represents a danger for the driver, passengers, other road users and himself. Let's see why:

Your pet's risky behaviors: demanding attention, coming to your knees, jumping on the driver, being at his feet or under the pedals, jumping out of the vehicle, getting stuck under a seat, moving sharply in the passenger compartment by getting angry at something outside...

In the event of a collision: your pet becomes a projectile that endangers its life but also that of the people in the passenger compartment. To give you an idea: in a collision at 50 km/h, the animal is thrown with a force corresponding to 25 times its weight... It can also be thrown outside the vehicle and cause an overaccident.

On the other hand, if the emergency services have to intervene inside the passenger compartment to help you and your animal is uncooperative, they can take all the necessary measures to neutralize it...

It is therefore for all these reasons, that it is your duty to secure all car trips with your pet.

HOW TO TRANSPORT THE DOG BY CAR?

There are several choices available to you for the transportation of your dog or cat. They will be defined according to your vehicle and the space you can devote to it in the passenger compartment.

The transport crate, certainly the safest way under certain conditions, it must be :

- fixed or wedged, as for example, on the ground behind one of the front seats so that it does not become a projectile itself.

- rigid and not flexible.

- ventilated and your pet must be able to stand upright and turn on itself.

- adapted to your pet's size. In the event of an accident, in a crate that is too large, your pet will become a projectile. It could injure itself against the walls.

The safety belt for dog, certainly attached, this means is not without risks for him :

Preferably use harnesses designed for this purpose. They will be a guarantee of solidity. Do not attach it to a collar. In case of an accident, your dog could be at risk.

The attachment must be adjusted to avoid the risk of projection and collision in the passenger compartment.-

PUT IT IN THE TRUNK, AS LONG AS YOU RESPECT A FEW RULES:

Use the separation grids provided for this purpose. Choose them according to your dog's size. Protective nets are ineffective in the event of a violent impact.
Never put your pet in the trunk if it is completely closed.
Be careful, because if your dog is no longer in danger of being thrown forward, nothing will hold him back and there is a risk of crossing the rear window in the event of an accident.

CARRYING YOUR DOG OR CAT IN THE CAR: CONCLUSION

To conclude, in addition to the risk of a fine...
It is the responsibility of each owner to do everything possible to ensure the safety of his pet and that of others during his travels.
We hope that this article will provide you with information on how to set up the necessary prevention measures.
